Ever since the release of GenAI technologies, a global debate has erupted in recent years about the dangers of artificial intelligence. Not only the critical public, but also the big tech industry itself is warning of careless use of new technologies. A new study by the Millennium Project (MP) now addresses the political and legal governance of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), a form of AI that would exceed the capabilities and capacities of GenAI many times over. The team led by MP executive director Jerome Glenn concludes that comprehensive and far-sighted regulation of AGI by a UN agency and national governments is essential and urgently needed. From the study’s perspective, it is not only the fatal consequences of unregulated AGI that are cause for concern, but also the possibility that it could dominate future developments in just a few years’ time. Moritz von Stetten from the Future Impacts and German Node team examined the new study and met with Jerome Glenn to discuss its contents and summarised his findings in a paper.
